Tricep TrainingOn this page we're going to discuss tricep training. We're not going to focus on tricep exercises or workouts, but rather on when you should train your tricep muscles and why. Also covered will be correct tricep training technique and why it's so important to build strong triceps. We'll look at how you can get the most muscle growth out of tricep training by follow examples set by professional muscle builders. Tricep training - when should I train my triceps? First let's look at when you should train your tricep muscles and why. Your triceps are secondary muscles in all your pushing exercises (bench press etc). So it makes sense for your tricep training to be on the same day as your chest workout. If you are training your triceps with your chest, make sure you do your chest exercises first! If your tricep muscles are worn out before you hit your chest, you will not be able to hit the heavy weights and you won't workout your chest.
In this method of tricep training your triceps get pre-exhausted from your bench exercises, so 3-4 heavy tricep exercises after your bench workout will really hit your triceps hard. Here is a sample chest/tricep training workout that's used by an intermediate bodybuilder on Monday's and Thursday's:
This is just an example to show you what we mean by chest/tricep training. You can train you chest/triceps up to two times a week, but no more. Tricep training more that twice a week can lead to muscle fatigue, injuries and less muscle growth. For more advice on tricep training workouts, see our tricep workout page. Maximize your tricep training - focus on technique Sorry, but just pumping out loads of tricep exercises in the gym every week isn't going to cut it! Maximize every minute you spend tricep training and stop thinking about weights and focus on solid tricep training technique. You are better off lifting lighter weights and sticking to strict tricep training technique that lifting heavy weights with poor form. Our tricep exercise page goes through each exercise outlining how to keep to strict form to maximize tricep muscle load and growth. If you don't believe this do a test. For your next tricep training day focus 100% on technique on every single rep! Now let's see how your triceps feel the next day!
Work hard, then kick back! Correct tricep training on the correct days, using correct technique is only 1 piece is the tricep muscle building puzzle. To build your tricep muscle (or any muscle for that matter) you need to get rest and lots of it. Ideally, to compliment your tricep training you would be getting at least 9 hours of sleep each night, eating more than 1gram of protein per pound of bodyweight and keeping your cardio to a minimum. If you are tired and run down, it doesn't matter how big muscles you're training your triceps they will not grow! Tricep Training Summary If there's a way to do a tricep exercise a little bit easier, it's probably bad tricep training technique and it's cheating! Cheating yourself. Don't do it. When you're training in the gym focus on correct technique for best results. Train your triceps after your chest, for a maximum of two times per week. If possible, keep the exercise days three days apart (eg: monday/thursday). If you follow this plan you will get so much more out of your tricep training session!
